Lares highspeeds are manufactured to exacting standards with tolerances of as little as 20 millionths of an inch. You will feel the light weight, balance and quality of cut that our precision ensures. Your Lares highspeed will perform better than many highspeeds costing hundreds more! Where Are Lares Handpieces Made? - Lares highspeeds are assembled by our American workers in our Chico, California factory. Our skilled machinists fabricate most of the 40 or so precision components that make up a Lares highspeed from raw materials using our advanced computer controlled (CNC) equipment. From those components our assemblers build and test every Lares highspeed to our rigid quality and performance standards.

Dental Handpiece Torque vs. Power: Is There A Difference?

Often dentists and even some handpiece suppliers use torque and power interchangeably. They are not the same and their values are defined by totally different units of measure.

First consider this:

  • In the world of engineering, power is defined as “the rate of doing work”.
  • Torque is defined as “a force applied at a given distance from the center of rotation that causes rotation”.

Here is an example illustrating the difference between power and torque in the case of a pickup truck:

  • The power (horsepower) of a pickup truck’s engine determines how long it will take the truck to tow a 5,000 lb trailer to the top of a ½ mile hill.
  • The torque (ft-lbs) of a pickup truck determines if it can pull a particularly difficult stump out of the ground.

In the world of dental handpieces…

Power is measured in Watts.

So for the application of cutting a tooth with a highspeed handpiece, the power of the handpiece would determine how long it would take to remove a predetermined amount of tooth material.

Torque – for handpieces would translate into “stall torque” – is measured in N-cm.

So for the application of cutting tooth with a highspeed handpiece, the torque of the handpiece would determine how much pressure could be applied to the bur before the handpiece stalled during cutting.

To generate cutting power…

A highspeed handpiece needs both rotational speed (rpm) and torque. The product of the two (speed x torque) determines its power and how fast tooth material is removed.

  • Smaller head handpieces tend to have higher speed (rpm) and lower torque yet can still generate good cutting power while delivering better accessibility and visibility.
  • However, larger head handpieces typically have much higher torque and somewhat lower speed (rpm) but higher overall cutting power. So if access and visibility are not a problem, a larger head handpiece will serve to remove the most tooth material in the least amount of time.

Clinically, power is clearly more important than torque and leading handpiece manufacturers typically publish the maximum cutting power their handpieces deliver at maximum allowable air pressure.

Now you are an expert on handpiece power vs. torque!
